Sailing out of Games?
NZPA Washington American yachtsmen are considering asking the International Yacht Racing Union to withdraw from all future Olympics “for the good of the sport,” the “New York Times” reported yesterday. The newspaper said that a resolution to this effect was tabled at a meeting of the United States Yacht Racing Union in Chicago last weekend. Delegates will discuss it
with their local members before making a final decision. Harman Hawkins, the president of the U.S. Union, was quoted as saying that "the unhealthy political atmosphere” of the Olympics was a prime cause of concern.
“Even at the winter Olympics in Lake Placid, there were guards with machine guns and barbed wire fences.” he said. "It’s just not pleasant any more.”
