Fiji’s publicity officer, Mr Bill Raikuna, takes part in an impromptu dance with a member of the audience that watched a concert held in Cathedral Square yesterday to raise funds for Fijian flood relief. The concert, compered by Selwyn Toogood, featured a number of well known New Zealand artists.
The Fiji disaster-renef fund is more than $lOOO richer as a result of the concert. More than 1000 people stopped at various times to listen to the performers, many in the front dancing spontaneously when the music was at its liveliest Collectors gathered $1163, more than half of it in notes and including much Australian and American currency.
The concert was organised by Air New Zealand and 3ZB and featured artists as diverse as Bill and Boyd and Gray Bartlett. Backing was provided by a Fijian hotel band. The public relations officer of Air New Zealand (Mr L. Blair) said he was “more than happy” with the amount raised. A cheque has been forwarded to the Fiji disaster relief fund.
