P.M. rales out early Budget
PA ’ Wellington The Cabinet committee on expenditure has been “very tough” this year, according to the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon). The committee recommends levels of spending by Government departments in preparation for the Budget. “Very little has got through the net,” ,Mr Muldoon told a news conference. Mr Muldoon said each department had been asked to make a 50 per cent saving on new policy proposals and he predicted there would be “considerable I !*, wailing and gnashing of fi teeth” in' the offices of heads of departments over'thenext week. Mr Muldoon seemed to rule out an early Budget this year. He said it looked as though the Government’s deficit before . borrowing would come out “almost exactly” as budgeted. “What that means is that our spending and Tevenue are very close to estimates,” he said. There was therefore no need for urgent change. “I am not contemplating a very early Budget,” Mr Muldoon said.
