Electricity charges

Sir, — Because the Government’s bulk rate to the Christchurch City Council is discriminatory, the inequalities of our power charges are cold hard facts.' When the single parent, widow, or family attempting to keep warm, cook, and bath yet pay the same rates as a "family which owns a swimming pool and enjoys all the luxuries of life, the national system is merciless. The “haves” have many lights, appliances, extravagances such as bar, fridges, colour TV, film projectors, shoe polishers and sauna machines. The “have nots” struggle for the basics.. The rate per unit is one link to inequality. A graduated family tariff based on ability to pav and need is a fair go. So if other power authorities are in a position to offer cheaper rates, this council should start today roaring and not squeaking to central Government. No roar, no squeak, no power, after October 11. — Yours, etc., GRAEME STANLEY. April 14, 1980.
