Crime among youth
Sir, —Becoming disturbed by the crime that exists today, I wish to draw attention to the urgent need .of most! of these offenders. Usually under 20, they have no-one to care and nothing to do. So many old folk are afraid of the actions of the youth of today. They are not much different from what I was. I grew up in Lyttelton—during the “black-out” years. I worked in Christchurch, attended night school two nights and worked on Friday night as well as on Saturday, morning and I had no fear. Today I am like most folk I meet—reluctant to open the door to strangers. Living alone is not easy and I pray that the lodges, Lions and Rotary clubs, etc., realise that it its boredom and neglect that causes a lot of this crime. Surely these organisers can hire halls and parks, and teach them to learn new and vital fun and enjoyable pastimes.—Yours, etc., MURIEL PHILLIPSON. April 14, 1980.
