Pastoral returns on winning note

PA Wellington The high-class mare Pastoral returned to racing on a high note when she scored a decisive win in the Taipua Handicap, second leg of the double at the Otaki-Maori meeting yesterday. Pastoral showed she was one of the best sprinting three-year-olds in the Central Districts last winter and her performance yesterday showed she has retained that brilliance. Trained at Foxton by Dave Enright, Pastoral was ridden by his apprentice, Mervyn Bishop, who had ridden only one previous winner.

Though she was a trifle tardy at the start, - Pastoral enjoyed a smooth run along the inner. She was conceding the leaders some lengths on the home turn, but with her light weight, Pastoral had little trouble gathering them in to record a good win. Noir Vitesse, which -led the chase after Smart Fella to the home turn, could not produce enough to hold Pastoral off and had to be content with second, while Smart Fella weakened to third.
