' Beer and baccy’ tax alteration suggested
PA Auckland The Auckland Hospital Board has suggested that the alcohol and tobacco tax be removed from the consumers price index. The “beer' and baccy” tax, as it is often referred to, provides funds for many community-care projects, but it is fully committed in the running costs of approved projects. The government, according to the chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board
(Dr Frank Rutter) is reluctant to increase the tax because it would then increase the consumers price index, allowing unions to bargain for bigger wage increases. If it was removed the Government could then increase the tax, Dr Rutter said. Most smokers and drinkers would not mind, he said. The board will' offer its suggestion to the Government.
