Top band to start rehearsals tomorrow
It is tough at the top. Members of the SkellerupWoolston Brass Band returned to Christchurch last evening after a triumphant 18-day visit to Australia — and will tomorrow begin intensive practice for their next big competition. The band was judged the champion .brass band of Australia in , the Australian national band championships at Gambier, South Australia.' All but five band members returned to - Christchurch last evening.
The band’s • director (Mr Mervyn .Waters) described the tour as “exciting and rewarding,” but he hoped;
it had not jeopardised the band’s chances in the New Zealand centennial brass band titles at Christchurch next month. “Our competitors have been preparing for up to two months for the championships and we will begin to* morrow,” Mr Waters said.. After the, band’s success in Australia, it had 'been invited to return - to Perth at Christmas - — all expenses Paid- • ' “ Mr Waters estimated the cost of such a tour would be $60,000. The ' band would consider the invitation, but | a decision would depend on other, commitments.
