Paddy Beaufort fit

Paddy Beaufort looked close to a win when he was placed at Riccarton last week, and an attractive training sprint there yesterday brought him into further favour for the Marlborough Racing Club’s Glengarry Handicap on Saturday. He was going strongly in the hands of race rider David Walsh clear _of Aramis and Pompous Prince finishing 800 m on a soft No. 1 grass in 49.65. Aramis resumes after an enforced spell in the second leg of the Marlborough T.A.B. double, and should come to form quickly at the meeting.

Hi Magic, a form runner in the Marlborough Cup and her stablemate, the sprinter, Nyah, were paired for a good gallop yesterday. Hi Magic worked away from the 1400 m, and Nyah joined in after 200 m. They ran in from the 800 m in 49.25, Nyah holding a lead of about half a length at the end.

Ernest and Capital ran their 800 m in 50.45. Jim Collett has been engaged to ride Ernest in the second leg at Marlborough. Bold Dancer and Leazam reeled off their 800 m in 495, and Tipsy and Deliana followed in 50.55.

Barkley Boy was kicked out to finish 1400 m clear of Yakcam in a smart Imin 27.55, the last 800 m in 50.25. Orderho, looking bright and fresh after a spell, came up with a run to match his looks. He hurried in from the 600 m in 36.25. La Tigue led Beach Bird by half a length ending 600 m in 365.

! Beach Bird was by no means overshadowed, and should go close to winning the Greig Handicap at the Marlborough meeting.

Five qualifying trials on the course proper, three for maidens and the others for two-year-olds, produced their share of ■ incidents. There were delays after two horses bolted. Damazam, from the Peter Jones stable, won the first 1000 m event for two-year-olds by two lengths from Super Speed in Imin 2.25. The winner and runner-up both qualified, Super Speed is from the Murfitt stable, which was also represented by Double Quick, a fairly distant third.

Double Prism, another from the Murfitt stable, triumphed in the second event for two-year-olds by a neck from Scotch.' Dream and ran the 1000 m. in Imin--2.45. Anonoma Mae, trained by Ray Harris, finished only a nose back third.

Singing Star and Bavarian qualified by filling the first two places in the first maiden qualifying heat over 1200 m.

Playtoi, trained by the former jockey Arthur Stokes, won the second maiden qualifying- trial, from Bit of Fun, and Tai Noon was too seasoned for the others in the third heat, winning by .three parts of a length from Orcadian Lad.
