Studmaster dies aged 90

The racing world lost one of its greatest personalities with the death recently of Marcel Boussac, aged 90. The Boussac studs and stable dominated the European scene for a generation but two years ago the bloodstock empire crashed along with the Boussac-owned textile industries. T Boussac colour-bearers won 12 French Derbys, the first of them in 1922, the last with Acamas 56 years later. Boussac won five English classic races — the 2000 Guineas with Djebel, the Derby with Galcador, the Oaks with Asmena, and the St Leger with Scratch II and Talma 11. Boussac believed that mating policies should be based on* the crossing of bloodlines drawn from the widest sources available. He used the phrase brassage des sangs. or “brewing of bloodlines.” This represented a revolutionary new approach to the problem of thoroughbred breeding in 1920 'when he began to develop his stud. The mistake that was believed, to have cost him dear was that he abandoned his pioneering principles once they had taken, him to the Stop. “■ ' * '
