PRIME CATTLE The prime beef market was dominated by lines of unfinished cattle and this served to depress a sale which was about $lO behind last week. Well finished prime beef still sold well but many of the. lighter cattle were $l5 back. I The yarding was about the I same as last week — 554 com- ] ! pared with 588 last week—but! ■ buyers were not enthusiastic. : The price paid per kilogram! of . beef reduced about 5c yes-1 i terday and in some cases values ; decreased to a level close to the : guaranteed minimum price level. I The best steer price was $435] for the best of 12 from G. • Steele, a Port Levy farmer Who regularly supports the Adding-1 i ton sale.. The top price for i heifers was $314 and for cows: I it was $309. , I Heifers and steers up to 220 kg ■sold for between 122 c and 129 c; : 220 kg to 270 kg, between 121 c and 127 c; over 270 kg, 122 c. Store cattle The 526 adult store cattle offered (152 last weelfl were very difficult to sell and the market for these reflected the easing in tne prime cattle sale. Quality improved compared witn last week but this did not add any buoyancy to the sale. Generally, values declined $l5 to §2o over last week. Sales of store cattle included: Ministry of Agriculture Farm (Westport), 30 2j-year Angus and Angus cross in-calf heifers at $240 to §272, 87 mixed age Hereford cows at $2OO to $261; Guardian Farm (Westport), 18 20month Hereford steers at $222. 21 20-month Angus steers at $209; I. J. Pettigrew (Waiau), 22 20month Angus steers at $240 to $261. Vealers Only -12 vealers were offered and these sold at values at least §lu behind last week when the yarding was 47. Heifers reached $2OO, steers $214, and an exceptionally good quality line of exotic bull calves made $207. ■ Dairy cattle There were no dairy cattle | offered. r ■ | lat pigs 1 Good quality fat pigs sold well. There was a small yarding. and | this included fewer unfinished and overfat pigs than usual. The chopper market was the largest for several months. Oyer 60 were entered. The market opened $lO to $l5 behind last week arid then remained steady. Keen local demand from fatteners also, kept light chopper values at a reasonable level. Values were:— Light pork: $55 to $64. Medium pork and light bacon: $65 to $BO. Medium and heavy baconers: $B2 to $93 with odd s»l*B to §104.50. Light choppers: $65 to $BO. Heavy choppers: $lOO to $l3O. Store pigs After last week’s good sale .the weaner and store market eased by §4 to $6 and pigs throughout the market looked reasonable buying. The market was much bigger than last week, but because quality was good the market remained firm throughout. Again there was very limited interest in breeding stock. Values were:— Small weaners: $l5 to $2O. Good weaners: $2l to $27. Slips and small stores: $28,t0 $3B. Large stores: $39 to $4B with odd sales to §55.
