Labour’s Maori policy
Sir, — Does one cringe or be amused by Mr Rowling’s announcement (“The Press,”April 14) of Labour’s Maori pledges? With a probable by-election in a Maori seat imminent, one must consider such an encompassing list of costly promises to be bath a sham and politicking of the desperate. Not only is the list long, with additions still to come, it is largely composed of hollow yet emotive words which alone . may be the reason Dr Bassett has been appointed (also April 14) to co-ordinate Labour’s election efforts in Auckland, should Mr Rata force, a byelection based upon his contention that Labour and its Maori spokesman cared not for the people it now sees fit to woo.—Yours, etc., WILLIAM RICHARDSON. April 14, 1980.
