Firemen ban routine cleaning
Christchurch firemen have banned routine cleaning, maintenance and training duties in a dispute over the early retirement of a fireman. The ban was called for at a stop-work meeting of the city’s 200 firemen yesterday. A firemen, aged 52, had been retired before all matters on compensation for his retirement had been settled, said the president of the Canterbury and Nelson branch of the South Island Fire Brigades’ Union (Mr P. A. Stanley;. Firemen have an insurance policy that compensates them for the loss of their job if they are .declared medically unfit.
