Rope cut before title fight
Boxing promoters for Sunday evening’s title fight at Trillo’s in Auckland found a ring rope had been cut in two places only an hour and a half before the start of the evening’s programme. “It was. a vicious piece , of vandalism which could have resulted in serious injury to any one of a; dozen amateur boxers or; the main bout opponents,” said the co-promoter, Brian Edwards, yesterday. He and his son, Michael, had staged the evening’s entertainment, which featured Monty Betham, of Auckland, winning the New Zealand light-heavy-weight title from Lance Revill in the eleventh round. “We were testing the ropes 90 minutes or so before the bouts were due to start,” said Mr Edwards’ son. “We could not understand why one would not tighten, and noticed that stitching on the plastic covering had been tampered with, then that . the rope had been cut right through in two places. “I was lucky, after a frantic search of ships on the wharves, to find a fisherman who , could splice ropes. He repaired ours and the fight was • able to go on.”
