“Forced to take a holiday”

Sir, —It is logical that, in a secular society, no-one should have to observe religious festivals; provided always that all are free to do so. But why, sir, stop at Christmas and Easter? What about week days? Woden, Thor, Freya and those other: chaps are no longer worshipped with, the fervour of bygone days; other calendar names are similarly suspect. Sunday could become “First Day,” an expression both Biblical and logical. Monday could be either; “Moneyday” (after one of the seculag pantheon) or “Moan-day” ■— its normal activity; “Sabbath” (seventh) would do for Saturday, while Friday could be observed as “Sickie Day’’ (for the week-end shopping). The rest I leave to the imagination of readers but suggest that to meet the ambitions of apotheosis of the media one day should be set aside' as “Editors’ Day.” Alas, it was all tried during the French revolution, but failed.—-Yours, etc., GLYN PARRY.
