Sport in South Africa

Sir, — Seeing is believing, says John Leslie, dismissing the case against apartheid sports contacts, but showing no inclination to allow his claimed curiosity to let him see what South Africa’s nonracial- sports people believe. One body which has seen is the' Western- Province Council of Sport, affiliated to the non-racial South African Council on Sport. Last year; it ■ stated its belief: “A disgraceful arid’' shocking state of affairs exists where there are no athletics and cycling facilities for non-racial sportsmen and spectators in Cape Town.” Another who has seen and believed isS.A.C.O.S. president, Mr Hassan Howa. He says: “Nothing significant has been done to change the sport structure of this country.” Does Mr Leslie really want to hammer them .in their struggle against injustice by supporting apartheid sport? E. Sutherland claims that events in Afghanistan have made the antiapartheid cause disappear. This will be news to those living under apartheid. — Yours, etc., A. .J CAMPBELL, I April 13, 1980. 3
