‘Thousands wait for surgery’

Thousands of people are waiting for surgery in Christchurch but many of them do not take the op* portunity to enter hospital when they are asked, according to the medical superintendent of Christchurch Hospital (Dr D. A. Andrews). At last January 17, 3200 people had been, on the waiting list for surgery at hospitals run by the North Canterbury Hospital Board, he said. But about a third of the people on the waiting lists

at Christchurch Hospital, the Princess ' Margaret Hospital, and Burwood Hospital declined the chance for surgery when they were given about 18 lays notice.

“This is a new and surprising trend and there seems to be no single cause for it,” said Dr Andrews. “It appears there are a lot of people who want to get in for their operations but they are less than helpful when the chances are made for them.”
