Sex education veto praised

PA Wellington! The Society for Promotion of Community Standards has| congratulated the Minister ofi Education (Mr Wellington) for not accepting the recommendations of. the Johnson report. The Johnson committee’s report recommended that sex education be included in a course on human development and relationships for schoolchildren. It was rejected by Mr Wellington last week.

In a letter to Mr Wellington yesterday, the society's* national secretary (Miss Pat-‘ ricia Bartlett) said it considered he had correctly interpreted the Wishes of the majority of New Zealand parents. “We firmly believe children

should be allowed to enjoy their childhood untroubled by lessons and discussions on adult sexual behaviour,” she said.

Miss Bartlett asked that parents be involved in planning any syllabus which might be introduced on human relationships, and that the course be optional for schoolchildren.

Topics such as homosexual acts, abortion, and contraception should not be included , in any proprosed programme, she said.

Schools should have the right to decide whether to run the courses, and parents should be allowed to vet all books and films, before their children were admitted to the programme. Miss Bartlett said.
