Letter on dolphins

NZPA-Reuter Tokyo A letter signed by 48 United States congressmen protesting against a mass killing of dolphins by Japanese fishermen has been delivered to the office of the Japanese Prime Minister (Mr Masayoshi Ohira) recently, according to members of the conservationist group, Greenpeace. The letter, sponsored by Representative Cecil Heftel (Democrat, Hawaii) also asks for the early release of Mr Dexter Cate, a Hawaii conservationist held in jail since March 8 in the Sasebo Prison in Japan’s Nagasaki prefecture. Mr Cate, aged 36, is charged with damaging fishing nets. He has acknowledged that he cut nets holding some 300 dolphins near Iki Island in southern Japan. Fishermen netted and killed more than 500 dolphins near the fishing island, claiming the dolphins ate valuable fish and scared away squid. The letter from the Congressmen said dolphins are intelligent mammals and should not be slaughtered indiscriminately.
