Council rents to rise again
Christchurch City Council urban-renewal housing rents will probably rise again on May 29, from $1 to $2 a week. Increases for community and reclamation housing were recommended yesterday by the council’s housing and property committee. Rents last went up in July, when the average rise was $1 a week. After the recommended rise, base rents will be $27 for a one-bedroom flat, $3O for a two-bedroom flat, and $35 for a three-bedroom flat. Extra charges for garages and carports will not change.

The committee’s chairman (Cr Mollie Clark) said that the proposed increases were “extremely modest,” and were necessary to keep the housing account independent from rates. The account is Expected to have a deficit of about $45,000 this year, cortipared with the estimated $112,000 deficit at the start Of th? financial year.
