Call for aid to Fiji
NZPA Suva Fiji’s Prime Minister (Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara) has appealed to the nation for help for the victims of the “colossal” disaster brought by Cyclones Wally and Tia.
“Fiji has suffered from severe hurricanes in the past, but never before have we experienced a succession of disastrous cyclones in so short a time,” he said.
“The people still have not recovered from Cyclone Meli in March, last year, which took a heavy toll of life and pro-
perty,” the Prime Minister said.
Now, within two weeks, Cyclones Tia and Wally had destroyed niore homes and schools and done extensive damage to cash and food crops over a ver,' wide area.
“Many of the victims had lost all" their worldly belongings,” he said. The Ministry of Health has mounted a massimmunisation campaign in the Rewa area east of Suva and in Navua to the west to guard against typhoid in areas whose water-supply has been disrupted.
