$10,750 for stallion services

By

W. R. CARSTON

Revenue from an auction of stallion services held at Riccarton yesterday will give a good boost to the stake for a feature race for fillies and mares to be staged by the Canterbury Jockey Club at Ithe Club’s February meeting next year. The sale of the stallion services, generously donated by the proprietors of nine studs from Auckland to Invercargill, brought in $10,750. After deducting expenses involved in promoting the guction it is estimated that

the club will receive at least $7500. This amount added to another $7500 which the club has promised to provide will ensure that the new feature event will be worth at least $15,000.

Top price at yesterday’s auction was $2lOO paid by Mr R. J. Wilson, of Dunedin, and Mr E. Brooks, of Ashburton, for the service to the Auckland-based Sea Anchor. The stud fee for the Englishbred son of Alcide and Anchor, which stands at Haunui Farm, Ltd, was $2OOO last season but it is likely that that will be raised to

$2500 for the new season. The first two lots auctioned were purchased by Dalgety Bloodstock. They went to $lBOO to secure the service to the Cambridge-based Alvaro and paid $750 for the service to Balidon, an Irishbred newcomer to the Hampton Lodge Stud, Invercargill.

Mr J. G. Carran, of Otautau, paid $l4OO for the service to the Inglewood Stud’s stallion, Beaufort Sea, and the service to the Americanbred Brauner, which stands at the West Derby Stud, Levin, went to the bid of the Riccarton trainer, Ivan Thomas, for $1650.

The service to Catus, which stands at the Ardsley Stud, Masterton, was bought for $9OO by the Riccarton trainer, Boyd Buzan, and Mr C. McCall, of Weedons, paid the same price for the service to Otehi, a Star Kingdom stallion standing at the Sovereign Lodge Stud, Levin.

The service to Lonesome Dude, which stands at the Alton Lodge Stud, Te Kauwhata, was purchased by messrs R. J. and F. Hill, of Mangakino, for $650 and Mr R. Fulton, of Christchurch, paid $6OO for the service to the Riccarton Stud’s stallion, Palatable,
