1200m race that wasn’t. . .

Because of an error in programming, the Canterbury Jockey Club had a problem before racing started at Riccarton yesterday. The Bumside Handicap, the third leg of the T.A.B. treble, was programmed as a 1200 m race, but being an apprentice race it was not possible to present such an

event at a distance short of 1400 m. Connections of the horses accepted for in the race were called for before the first race yesterday to be • told of the situation. Ivan Thomas, the Riccar- ■ ton trainer Of In the Clear, the likely favourite for the race, chose to withdraw his horse when told it could not 1 be a 1200 m race.

Some of the others with horses in the race said they were not happy about the situation, but 12 of the carded field of 15 went ,to the •post. Spy Troop and Musterer were the two best backed runners and they were the principals in a cliff-hanger of a finish. Musterer, a newcomer at

the meeting, scampered away to a handy lead up the straight, and lasted by a nose from Spy Tro’op, which had only stragglers behind her at the 800 m.

Musterer and Spy Troop returned a forecast dividend' of $12.95, Surprisingly, the quinella on the race was slightly better at $13.35.
