Bleak view on cattle
NZPA Sydney Australian cattle producers face another serious recession, according to the Australian Cattlemen’s Union. The union’s president (Mr Maurice Binstead) said the long-term consequences of what he described as the most critical, drought in 50 years, combined with falling United States beef prices, were alarming. Federal and state governments must realise that drought conditions were creating a state of emergency and relief provisions had to be re-assessed. Mr Binstead said the seriousness and spread of the drought through much of eastern Australia meant that the only alternative for cattlemen was to sell stock now before their condition deteriorates further, resulting in short-term market depression.
