U.E.B. mill site in doubt
PA Hamilton Hamilton City Council pressure could force U.E.B. Industries, Ltd. to build its S27M paper mill in Auckland instead of the Waikato. The council is concerned that the proposal, which involves a block of Waipa County land just over the city boundary, breaches urban development policies. The county council will have to set up a special industrial zone, and the city council will consider a recommendation that no objection ba raised to this so long as the company puts up a convincing case for side-stepping
these policies. But the managing director of U.E.B. (Mr R. Tedcastle) said that lengthy delays could force a switch to Auckland, as a building had to be ready for equipment expected to arrive from Germany early next year. The company did not want this to happen, he said. Apart from a policy of decentralisation, it had found the Te Kowhai Road site ideal from the point of view of labour, the location of ports, a reasonably handy supply of pulp (Kinieith), and proximity to its Frankton plant, and the main trunk railway. ,
