Testing hockey device

PA Auckland A device built by an engineer, Robin Williamson, is playing a big part in testing the New Zealand Olympic hockey goal-keepers, Maurice Marquet and Graeme Sligo, at Hobson Park, Auckland on Sunday.

The simple machine, powered by a pressure engine, fires tennis balls at a rate determined by the operator. “It can fire balls up to 200

miles an hour,” said Mr Williamson "and the direction and speed of the shot may be altered at will.”

Said Marquet: “It’s just fantastic for one’s concentration, reflexes and recovery rate but after a spell it certainly leaves one’s legs rather dead.” Mr Williamson was prompted to construct his device when coaching his daughter, Anne, at school.
