Simpson wins Sumner squash
Bryan SimpsOn, the No. 1 sfeed. overpowered the thirdseeded Lawrence Skurr, 9-3, 9-4, 2-9, 4-9, 9-1, in the final of the Marine Tavern Sumner squash tournament. It was the first local success of the season for Simpson, who has been runner-up to Rod Hayes in two previous
tournaments. Simpson easily won the first two sets against Skurr, whom he forced into error. But he lost the next two when some most aggressive play by Skurr paid dividends. In the fifth Simpson’s fitness won out, with lack of concentration causing Skurr to make several errors. While Simpson had had a 3-0 win over Don Preston in one semi-final the other was much more closely contested and Skurr Only prevailed over the second seed, Barrie Matthews, after dropping the first two games and having two match balls against him at 9-9 in the fifth. It was the first tournament appearance of the season for Matthews. There was disappointment in the women’s section, with both the top two seeds,
■Merit Holland and Kate Carpinter, having to withdraw. Carpinter had the flu and< : Holland pulled a calf muscle !in the third game of her isemi-final against Gwen iCowie (Otago).
