Hardship grants sought
PA Wellington The Education Department has received 11,886 applications from tertiary students for the extra hardship grant. Most applicants are being granted near the $l7 a week maximum.
Mrs L. Green, of the department’s bursaries section, said applications were still arriving steadily. Most students were being granted near the full amount, but the 28 specially employed temporary staff were not keeping an exact tally of how many students were getting how much. .
Auckland University applications had not yet been received, and these were likely to boost the total by several thousand.
Mrs Green predicted that most applications would be in by late May. Most applications were filled out reasonably well, she said.
-Under the new scheme introduced this year, all tertiary students receive a basic bursary of $23 a week and have the option of applying for the additional hardship grant of up to $l7 a week.
