Sprinters in limelight

' Special correspondent Hastings The open sprinters, Pennevari and Fix, took the limeJight at yesterday morning’s Hastings track session as they carried out their semifinal trials for the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Saturday. Fast work was carried out on the course proper and plough and both provided easy footing. Pennevari finished clear of stablemate Great Dane after 1000 m in Imin 1.7 s . the last 800m' in 50.1 s and the final 600 m in 38.45. Great Dane’s time for the full distance was Imin 2.15.

Pennevari looked to be hitting out extremely well. Her trainer, Marlene Todd,

said that the mare has just come right but needs a firm track to show some form. Fix was under a strong hold at the ‘end of 800 m with Irish Beauty. The two clocked 50.75, the last 600 m in 38.8 s but could have gone much faster. Fix is another which is waiting for a firm track. She was an unlucky fifth at her last start.

Drum, preparing for the Hawke’s Bay Cup on Saturday worked in from the 1200 m peg on the course proper. He clocked Imin 19s the last 800 m in 52.3 s and final 600 in 40.85. A firm track on Saturday will help him in his attempt -to win the second leg of a $200,000 “triple crown.”
