Compensation looks certain for Sertain today

Special correspondent i New Plymouth | Sirtain, which was pipped; in the last strides of the I Opunake Cup, could gain compensation with a win inj the Besley Memorial Handi-I cap. first-leg of the T.A.8.! double at the Waverley Rac-| ing Club’s meeting at Waverley today. Sirtain, a recent winner at Ellerslie, raced on both days of the Taranaki meeting without much luck. He then downed all but Blue Defence in the Opunake Cup after racing prominently from the start. The five-year-old does not mind the softer footing which is certain to prevail following the early arrival of winter. The Stratford seven-year-old, Le Caleb, has raced generously at his last couple of starts. He has gone well at Waverley in the past and from his position in the weights he must be respected. - Northfleet is likely to improve with his run in the Opunake Cup and he could be a danger at reasonable each-way odds. As the Opunake Cup winner, Blue Defence will ati tract strong support. At his [best he is a top-class galloper. I On her home track. [Agencia should be the one 'to beat in the second leg, the Wairoa Handicap. Agencia was just beaten by Meed on the second day at New Plymouth before she scored at the Opunake meeting a week later. Tania Fair continues to race well and along with another consistent runner, Tavern Queen, can never be left out of calulations. Sovereign’s Knight, a

stablemate of Tania Fair, returned his best effort for some time when placed behind Agencia at the Opunake meeting. A similar performance would make him hard to beat but he is finding it difficult to win one. Smart Fella, which is back on his old home track, has not raced since being gelded. He often goes well while fresh and he could be the surprise package.
