Sir, — The citizens of Christchurch should get together as they did for Telethon, and support the people of Avonside in their fight to stop the desecration of our lovely city and squares (like those so jealously guarded overseas). It does not harm me one bit, as a motorist, to drive round a beautiful square or winding road, instead of hurtling along at high speed, in ‘ a straight,, boring line. Cities overseas are having the courage to say:' “No more motorways, our life style is more important.” We should let it be known to the City Council that in the 20-year plan for us, we never did want this motorway (time is proving us right) or the ruination of our squares. Let us make them spend some of the money on upgrading our other good roads. — Yours, etC " JOAN HOCKING. March 29, 1980.
