' Big future’ for gasohol

NZPA Washington A big United States commitment to producing gasohol indicates that New Zealand can , go the same way, according to the Under-Secretary of Energy (Mr B. E. Brill). In talks with United States Department of Energy officials in Washington he had been told that the United States planned to produce 500 million gallons of gasohol (alcohol fuel obtained from crops and combined with gasoline) by the end

of next year, he said. Current production was about 80 million gallons a year. “This will have a sign= ificant impact on us,” said Mr Brill. “It' means that automobile-engine technology will buve to be compatible and where Detroit goes in this respect we have to follow.” Mr Brill said the future of the motor vehicle was such that it would not be any impediment to . the processing of biomass crops, crops grown directly for the production of alcohol fuel.

“This augurs well for* our ability to go with producing eveii-i.’ greater, quantities of gas> ohol.” The American target of* 500 million gallons by the* end of next year was* equal to half of New Zear» land’s current oil
