Numbers learning typing

Sir, — We would like to support the, remarks made recently by Mary Garlick, education officer for women with the Department of Education, about the range of jobs available to women. While typing is a valuable skill both in and out of the work place, it is important that girls at and leaving school consider a wider range of jobs than those traditionally held by women. As frequent photographs and articles show, (such as that of the top typographer apprentice , this week), women are entering and succeeding in fields previously closed to them* The Society for Research on Women is interviewing 30 girls in Christchurch in a wide variety of jobs, including painting, carpentry, welding radio, technology, optical technology, so that such information can be made available to girls choosing careers. In order to take advantage of these increased opportunities available to them girls at school should not specialise too soon and need to be made aware of these opportunities* — Yours, etc., ROSALIND BURDON, ALISON KUIPER, ROSEMARY NOVTTZ* March 28, 1980* •
