The new, expanded service between Europe and the Pacific Islands being inaugurated by the Columbus Line will, in its initial stages, use two modern semiconventional vessels, the Santa Teresa and the Santa Ines. Both will sail at eight-week intervals. The president of the Columbus Line (Mr E. Ludewig) said that the extended service was expected to make a significant contribution to regional development now that it was expanded to include Samoa. Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea, In, addition to Tahiti and New Caledonia, which the Jlne had served since 1968. The original service was started by the Hamburg-Sued group, the parent company of the Columbus Line. Mr Ludewig said: "We share the view of regional governments and private business that the region’s growth potential willnever be realised without reliable access to efficient transport services.” The new service began a fortnight ago when the Santa Teresa sailed from Rotterdam for the South Pacific. What effect the new service will have on the Pacific Forum Line service, in which the Shipping Corporation of New Zealand is an active participant, will not be known for some time. Ironically, it was the HamburgSued group which, just as the new New Zealand Caribbean was about to go into service. Introduced four vessels into the United States Gulf trade—a movfc expected to affect the hopedfor volume of trade by the corporation and its two consortium partners, Shaw-Savlll and the Bank Line in the Caribbean.
