A Swiss chemical company, Givaudan, has agreed to pay sl2l' million in compensation for a 1976 chemical plant explosion that polluted a large area around the northern Italian town of Seveso. The explosion sent poisonous clouds of dioxin drifting into the air, forcing the evacuation. of 800 people and causing the deaths of 40,000 animals. Hundreds of persons also suffered skin diseases. The most polluted area of the town of 17,000 people is still fenced off and barred to residents. — Milan.
