Need of doctors ‘not known’
PA Wellington It was . not known if there is a problem of distribution of doctors in the country, said the chairman of the New Zealand Medical Association (Dr B. G. Jew). He was commenting on a statement by the Minister of Health (Mr Gair) that general practitioners could soon be forced to work in places they did not want. Last year the association appealed for advice on known deficiencies, but the result was very light and showed merely a few’ areas that were already well known, he said. He said Mr Gair knew that the report of the Government-funded Medi-
cal- Manpower Committee was some months away. He said the Minister was trying to pre-empt the committee’s recommendations in a way that savoured more of political speech-making than of practical solutions. The threat of regimentation and direction was quite unreasonable and applied to no others in the work-force. Mr Gair had already been. told the solution centred on provision ot practical incentives, guaranteed availability of locums, holiday relief, refresher courses, and post-graduate study. This would cost money but it would solve the problem, said Dr Jew'.
