Deliberate plane crash
PA Wellington A Royal New Zealand Air Force pilot crashed his twinengined Devon plane to avoid hitting other aircraft and buildings at Wellington Airport last evening. ' / ' ' The aircraft’s brakes had failed .as it, z . was. moving along an airport taxiway towards the military hangar.The pilot, Flight Lieutenant S. Cairns, realised the plane was on a /collision course with a parked R.N.Z.A.F. Andover and the hangar, and so he retracted the wheels. The plane crashed on . its belly; and ’skidded about 20m before; stopping. Flight Lieutenant Cairns and his sole passenger escaped injury.
