Crash settlement
Lawyers have disclosed that it will cost S79M to satisfy damage* claims stemming from- the 1977 Canary Islands ground collision between two 747 jetliners which marked the world’s worst aviation disaster in which 587 died and 57 were injured. Lawyers involved in the monumental litigation said in the final report to a Federal judge that all damage claims have been settled except for eight which had to -be decided .by jury trials..At a final.court conference, in Manhattan, lawyers for all litigants delivered glowing tributes to Judge Robert Ward for a “masterful job in handling the complex multi-district litigations.” Most of the praise was due to the judge’s part in bringing about an early agreement in which the airlines and other defendants agreed to share responsibility and avoid a lengthy court fight to pinpoint liability. —New York.
