$6.5M wages lost
PA Auckland Many Kinleith mill workers will take up to 12 years or more to recoup wages they lost while suspended or on strike during the 80-day dispute Which ended last week. This is an unofficial estimate by N.Z. Forest Products, based on the gross average earnings lost by the 2500-odd workers directly involved in the strike.
. Collectively workers are estimated to have forfeited about $6.5 million in wages, or about $2600 a worker. However, only about 550
maintenance tradesmen were out of work and wages for the full period. The remainder, mainly timber workers, were laid off without pay for much less time as work progressively became unavailable for them. They then went on the dole or took holidays until suspension became inevitable.
Other workers, including forestry and clerical staff, went on working. N.Z. Forest Products lost more than s4b million in sales and market opportunities.
