Stark breaks record

Andrew Stark (University) broke the Canterbury 1500 m record with a superb run of 3min 41.6 s at Queen Elizabeth II .Park on Saturday. However, some officials were unhappy about the use of pace-makers and the record might have a stormy passage into the record books.

“I am not worried,” said Stark afterwards. '“They can take the record away from me, but they can’t take the time.”

Stark, who had help from

pace-makers right throughout his run, chopped a tenth of a second off the record held by Rod Dixon. If ratified, the record will be his fourth. He already holds the Canterbury 800 m, mile, and 3000 m.

His time on Saturday was the equivalent of a mile in 3min 58.85. Stark’s next race will be the Sedley Wells mid-winter marathon in June, his first. Then he will build himself up for the Pacific Conference Games at Queen Elizabeth II Park in January.
