Pay clerk foils armed robbery
PA Auckland A pay clerk, aged 52, wrested a sawn-off shotgun from a would-be robber at the Auckland City Council’s municipal abattoir yesterday. “At first I did not take any notice of him but then he snarled at me and stuck his gun against my ear,” said Mr Clarke. He took the money (about $2000) and stuffed it into his bag. The robber then tried to push Mr Clarke towards the strongroom, jabbing him in the back at the same time. “When you get angry you
i act fast and I was lucky ' enough to get the shotgun off i him,” said Mr Clarke. Thet bag was in the same hand as e the shotgun and after a bit . of a scuffle I got hold of it, too. e “I could not hope to chase s him though and he got away, j but we did not lose a cracker. I had the pyschological edge t because I was not dismayed s enough when he came in and d he looked a bit nervous. If s he had been a rodster who i looked like he knew what he -. was doing I would not have j taken the chance.”
