Otago ploughman wins

A farmer from Palmserston, Otago, who was placed fourth in the world ploughing championships in West Germany in 1978 won a further qualifying event for this year’s national championships at Rapaura, near Blenheim, this week. He is Noel Sheat, who was runner-up in the national contest at Studholme in 1978.

This year’s national championships will be held at Lincoln on May 14 and 15

before the world ploughing contest.

Nine ploughmen, including four from Canterbury, in the qualifying event held at the forty-ninth annual match of the Marlborough Ploughing Match Assocation on the P-operty of Messrs G. R. and I. M. Gifford. An event for women attracted three entries and, was won by Cheryl Gifford, the daughter of Mr G. R. Gifford. The results of the main qualifying event were Sheat,

153 points, 1; R. W. Mehrtens (Seadown) and S. A. Richmond (Seddon), 148 points, equal 2; B. Smith (Broadfield), 141 points, 4; W. Winter (Swannanoa), 136 points, 5. Richmond was judged to be the Marlborough ploughman who ploughed the best plot. A further qualifying event for the national championships will be held under the auspices of the Marlborough district of the Young Farmers’ Club at Kaituna tomors row.
