Chained women protest

Protesters yesterday chained themselves to a post outside a supermarket owned by the Member of Parliament for Nelson (Mr M. F. Courtney) to draw attention to what they said

were unfair abortion laws. Four women —- several from the Sisters Overseas Service — dressed in suffragette outfits, padlocked themselves to the post.

But Mr Courtney is unlikely to be aware of the protest: he is overseas. One of the organisers, Ms

Alison Walker, said they were unaware that Mr Courtney was away, but that did not make any difference to the protest, Mr Courtney (Labour) has held a conservative stance on the abortion issue. At the other end of town, members of the Nel-

son branch of the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child also staged a display. The chairman (Mrs Thora Young) said the S.O.S. protest at the same time was coincidental. S.P.U.C. was dispensing 1000 white flower buttonholes to passers-by.
