Home birth units

PA Auckland A call for hospitals setting up home birth units has been ■ made at the Nurses’ Association annual meeting. An Auckland midwife said that for many women, having a baby in hospital was not pleasant or enjoyable. Mrs Ruth Kay said that rigid rules, nurses snapping out orders, and uncaring medical attention often

plunged women into postdelivery blues.

Many women did not want to have their babies in cold, impersonal institutions and were joining the trend towards home births.

A change in attitudes, and home birth units at hospitals where mothers could stay and have their baby, with their husbands and other children also living in could solve the problem, Mrs Kay said.
