Corporal jailed

NZPA-Reuter Singapore! A New Zealand Army corporal has been jailed -for 18 months for causing the death of a Singaporean at a pedestrian crossing. Walter Joachim Wallace,- aged 37, of Wanganui, pleaded not guilty to causing the death of Mayappan Arunasalam, aged 57, who was flung seven metres by the impact in the accident last August. District Judge Sved Alwee Bin Alsree, in passing sentence, said Wallace had shown “a complete and total disregard for other road users, particularly for those using pedestiran crossings.”

Wallace was also fined SNZ236, in default a month’s jail, for failing to stop after the accident, and for not reporting it to the police within 24 hours,
