Gang rampage in flat

PA Auckland Rampaging gang members left a swathe of destruction through a Parnell flat yesterday. The 26 young people* both boys and girls aged between 13 and 17, smashed almost every item that was breakable in the fiveroom flat.

The flat was left with almost all its windows smashed furniture slashed or broken, its television set destroyed, broken plates and beer bottles scattered about the. floors, plus all its walls painted with various gang insignias.

Damage was estimated in excess of $30,000 by its caretaker, Mr S. F. VVassell. As the house was being wrecked yesterday morning, detectives were passing the property and heard the noise.

The detectives managed to catch 14 of the youths, the rest running away through propetries backing on to the two-storey house.

The police later released 13 of them after further questioning about a number of burglaries in the area in the last month.
