‘People want liquor laws as they are’

PA Wellington Most people want liquor laws to remain as they are, according to a survey carried out. by-the Liquor Advisory Council. Over the last two years the council has quizzed about one in every 300 New Zealanders between the ages of 14 and 65 to establish their views on the liquor laws. Asked what the law should be, 69 per cent supported the status quo. Of- these, 40 per cent believed' that the minimum drinking age in bars should be 20 years or over, and 29 per cent believed that

those 18 to 19 should only be allowed to drink in bars if accompanied by parents or a spouse aged 20 years or older.

The 29 per cent who wanted the drinking age lowered mainly came from the groups who were recorded as the heaviest drinkers.

A spokesman for the council said the results of the survey were not available to the Parliamentaty select committee on ancillary licensing last year because of the delays in: volved in processing the large volume of data.
