Assurances given on nuclear safety
N 7 P A Papeete The French Defence Minister (Mr Yvon Bourges), on tour of French Pacific territories, has said that all possible precautions were being taken with France’s n u c 1 e r-testing programmes in the area. “Nothing has been and never will be neglected concerning the safety of the nuclear tests,” Mr Bourges told a news conference before leaving for the test site at Mururoa. “We are taking all precautions possible and imaginable,” he said. The French experimenting centre in the
Pacific had become a “permanent laboratory of a very high degree of scientific and technical capability,” and he denied rumours that it would soon be moved elsewhere. Aslted about reports that France was interested in developing the neutron bomb, Mr Bourges said no decision had been made, but added: “I am not saving that we will never develop it.” . Mr Bourges did not indicate whether an atom* ic test, would be. made during his visit to .Mururoa. He spent three days visiting French military installations in Tahiti and talking with local officals.
