Help for Islanders

PA Auckland A special radio programme to improve the English spoken by new Island immigrants has started. The 15-minute broadcast is the result of nine months of work by the Manukau Foundation — which covers all community groups in Manukau — secondary’ schools, and tutors from the Auckland and Manukau technical institutes.

The convener (Mr E. Stevens) said yesterday that

many newcomers to New Zealand were handicapped in finding jobs and in everyday life by not being able to speak English properly. The course would aim to teach about 5000 people from Samoa, Niue. Tonga, and the Cook Island groups the rudiments of English.

Mr Stevens said that if the introductory programmes were successful the lessons would continue for a year.

The programme will be broadcast on Radio Pacific.
