Carpenters migrate

About 6000 carpenters and joiners migrated from New Zealand during the period 1974 to 1979, according to the latest newsletter of the Building Industry Advisory Council.

There had been a net outflow in every trade and profession “at a scale which will have serious repercussions if it continues at present rates,” the council said.

“With hopes set on a new growth period in the mid1980s when the energy schemes are , underway and there is more impetus in the export drive, the problems of finding appropriate skills could become a major restraint on development.”
